About the General Plan

Learn more about the General Plan, its components, and the project schedule.

What is the purpose of a
General Plan?

The General Plan serves as the Town’s long-range guide for shaping its future over the next 10 years. It establishes a shared community vision supported by goals, policies, and actions that will inform decisions about the Town’s physical development, economic vitality, and overall quality of life. Covering the full spectrum of the built environment, the General Plan provides a coordinated framework for thoughtful progress.

Why update it now?

State law requires Arizona communities to adopt a comprehensive, long-range General Plan to guide future development. These plans must be updated, adopted, and ratified by voters every ten years to ensure they reflect current conditions and community priorities. Queen Creek’s current General Plan was last ratified by voters in 2018.

What topics does the General Plan address?

Arizona law outlines specific planning elements that communities must address, with requirements varying by population size. In addition to these mandated components, municipalities may choose to include optional elements that reflect their unique priorities and long-term needs. For a community the size of Queen Creek, the State-required elements include:

  • Land Use
  • Circulation
  • Growth Areas
  • Open Space
  • Recreation
  • Redevelopment
  • Neighborhood Preservation & Revitalization
  • Environmental Planning
